Cold Outside

Minneapolis, August 2001: a flight school calls the FBI about Zacarias Moussaoui. Episode 1 follows him from a church dance in Colorado to a Cairo gallows in 1966, and asks how his books outlived him.

Scene-by-scene source notes

  • 1. MINNEAPOLIS. FBI field office. August 17–18, 2001. Deportation order of Aug 17; concern about insufficient probable cause for a criminal warrant; HQ agents believing it insufficient; the FISA route and the "foreign power" requirement; the case agent lacking information and reaching out to Paris and London on Aug 18: CR8 fn 93–96. Aug 17, 2001 was a Friday (calendar). The laptop is CR8's. "Twenty-four days" and the closing lines moved to scene 1b (now Sept 4, "Seven days").
  • 1b. "SPUN UP." Minneapolis, Washington, London. August 21 to September 4, 2001. CR8 "Zacarias Moussaoui", fn 97 (French information Aug 22 and 27; Ibn al Khattab; "spirited debate"; HQ and the National Security Law Unit declined), fn 98 (London hand-delivery Aug 21; CIA cable Aug 24, "suicide hijacker"; not a British priority), fn 99 (Sept 4 teletype: recipients, omission of the case agent's assessment, the FAA comment), fn 101 ("spun up"; "trying to keep someone from taking a plane and crashing into the World Trade Center"; the HQ reply, paraphrased), fn 103–104 (Tenet briefing Aug 23, "Islamic Extremist Learns to Fly", the four details, "no connection… apparent", the closing quoted sentence). All verified against the official text on 2026-10-17. Officials are unnamed except Tenet (public official, his own account to the Commission). The two closing lines moved here from scene 1, with the countdown changed to Sept 4 / seven days.
  • 3. GREELEY, COLORADO. A church social hall, one night in 1949. Greeley a dry town ("there wasn't a bar in the whole temperate town") and his irritation at Americans watering their lawns: SM (Smithsonian, Feb 2006). Church club membership, a dance after the service, the colored lights: AIS, "A Hot Night at the Church" (English translation hosted in the CIA Abbottabad release, text-matched 2026-10-16). Ministry of Education sent him: AIS translator's introduction; CR2 fn 12. AIS doesn't date the dance, so the winter and snow staging is cut; the scene says only 1949. The pastor and the student are unnamed composites; the real minister stays generic and unidentified. Qutb is present and never voiced.
  • 4. THE ONE WITNESS. Both quotes, the dimmed lamps, the gramophone, the song choice and the minister leaving "satisfied and contented": AIS translation (CIA Abbottabad PDF), text-matched VERBATIM. Published in *Al-Risala*: AIS translator's introduction (confirmed). "Already a sharp critic" replaces the unsourced "expecting the worst" (Encyclopedia.com: the trip was "perhaps to mollify his criticism"). The town's-memory line is cut (unverified). Song facts: `research/pilot-10min-sources.md`. The real recording is not used.
  • 5. WHO HE WAS. Egypt, 1906 to 1948. Born Oct 9, 1906, Musha, Asyut: Encyclopedia.com (*Encyclopedia of Islam and the Muslim World*), Britannica, *Biographical Encyclopedia of Islamic Philosophy* (agree). Qur'an by 10, Dar al-Ulum (B.A. 1933), teacher then Ministry inspector of primary schools: Encyclopedia.com. Novels, criticism, Mahfouz: SM. "Perhaps to mollify his criticism": Encyclopedia.com; Mahfouz's account: SM. Ministry sent him to study pedagogy: AIS introduction; CR2 fn 12. Cut: "arrived New York, November 1948" (unconfirmed) and the Canal Zone troops line (simplified to general history). Age 42 holds for any date after Oct 9, 1948.
  • 6. AMERICA, 1948 to 1950. Wilson Teachers' College, the Greeley M.A. in education, Stanford: AIS translator's introduction. Greeley 1949: SM ("Greeley, Colorado, circa 1950"; dance dated 1949 in the produced pilot sources) . Founding by Nathan Meeker of the *Tribune*, temperance, no bars, feedlots: SM. Materialism, racism, sexual permissiveness: Encyclopedia.com ("appalled by… materialism, racism, and sexual permissiveness"). Jazz and haircuts: AIS (text-matched). Cut: US support for Israel (unconfirmed tonight), sugar beets, "polite, formal" townspeople's impressions. CR2 quotes verified against the official text (fn 12). Meeker's Dec 14, 1869 appeal, >3,000 applicants, ~700 chosen, named for Horace Greeley, and the Grace Greenwood "nothing there but irrigation" quote: SM (quoted as SM prints it). Hospital elevator anecdote, "drought of sentimental sympathy", watermelon, haircut: AIS translation (text-matched VERBATIM for quotes). "Prosecutor's brief" and "petty" are the Record's characterizations of his rhetoric, not facts. Departure 1950: Encyclopedia.com ("left the United States in 1950"); Britannica (study 1948–50).
  • 7. CAIRO, 1952 to 1966. Coup and Nasser: standard history. "Perception" of closeness to the Free Officers; joined the Brotherhood 1951 or 1952; director of its propaganda/publication section; Jan and Oct 1954 arrests; torture; July 1955 fifteen-year sentence; release 1964 (month differs by source, so not stated); re-arrest Aug 1965; death sentence for sedition; hanged Aug 29, 1966: Encyclopedia.com (both entries), Britannica dates. Brotherhood founded 1928: standard. CR2 fn 11 and fn 13 quotes verified against the official text. Deliberately not used: any *Milestones* passage calling for violence.
  • 8. THE BOOKS. 1966 onward. Muhammad Qutb taught at King Abdul Aziz University in Saudi Arabia: SM. Do not state on air that bin Laden was his student (SM reports it; omitted as non-essential). Teachers/influence quote: CR2 fn 27 (VERBATIM). "Relies heavily": CR2 fn 11. "Stark view": CR2 fn 13. "Flammable societies… match": CR2 fn 17. "Islam is not the enemy": CR12. Hook: Aug 21, 2001 is the day the CIA analyst found the Mihdhar cable (CR8), E04's cold open; place word dropped. "Twenty-one days": Aug 21 → Sep 11.
